My 2024 Theatre Round Up [Play Edition]
1. Macbeth - Donmar / Harold Pinter
Okay so (unsurprisingly) hands down this is my favourite thing I've seen this year. I have been Macbeth posting all year so you can see some of my thoughts here, here and here. It was fine at the Pinter theatre, but it really was something special at the Donmar. The lack of blood was a real loss for the aesthetics of that final scene, and made it feel a bit sanitised? The porter's scene definitely worked better in the larger space though. My take away from the whole thing is basically: go see something at the Donmar, the intimacy of the space is incredible.
2. Importance of Being Earnest - NT
This production is so much fun! Ncuti is phenomenal. The costumes are fabulous. This sounds stupid, but it was really funny! (I know what you're thinking, it's Wilde, ofc it is. But I saw a West End production of this as a kid and I don't remember it being that funny? They leant into the farce and it was fine, but not that memorable.) So basically an absolute delight to watch, so joyous, you should go if you can get tickets. ((Hint: NT does £10 drops for the following week on Friday lunchtimes))
3. White Rabbit Red Rabbit - @sohoplace
I had the biggest drop of luck happening on a returned ticket for Michael Sheen when I was randomly scouring the website. (Big lesson here: look at the stupid theatre announcements so you know when stuff that's going to be in demand actually goes in sale) ((Lesson 2: be persistent when looking because return tickets do show up!))
This was not quite what I expected - not that I quite know what I was expecting. I went in thinking of this is going to be really uncomfortable for the actor, I want to see well known perfectionist Michael Sheen under pressure, it might be a little cringe from improv etc etc. Actually it was thought-provoking and possibly more challenging for the audience. (I think the most difficult part for the actor would be the run up rather than anything once they were on stage.) Anyway, it made me feel alive for about an hour so there we go.
4. Nye - NT / WMC
This was a fun jaunt through the life of Aneurin Bevan and I feel like you're in safe hands with Michael Sheen whatever it is anyway. Luckily if you missed it, he's doing it again this year so you won't miss out. I preferred it at the NT to the WMC but some of this is probably because I was closer to the stage in London. It's the kind of play you don't want to be right at the back of the WMC for really, not that MS can't command the space, just that he will be a pinprick in the distance. Get nearer if you can! The fun thing that I found was there were differences between the audience reactions in Wales vs London. [Prev posts: here and here]. Also note his Tredegar accent in this - it is different to his regular one. He didn't have to do all that!
5. A Child of Science - Bristol Old Vic
Another medical themed play, this time about the invention of IVF. (Kinda weird that the Netflix released Joy recently too? I assume there must be some kind of anniversary?) This might be naive of me, but I don't think I realised how contentious IVF was at the time. I was bawling by the end. Adelle Leonce was really excellent and I was disappointed to find that this was not based on a specific real life person. I saw it at the previews stage so it felt like a couple of things could do with an iron out, but overall it was enjoyable. Also Bristol Old Vic has really reasonably priced tickets with a pay what you can option as well, but! bear in mind that there are pillars that will impinge on your view pretty much anywhere on the higher level. I had made mortal enemies with the one in front of me for a fair portion of the first half before I eased up a bit.
6. Player Kings - Noel Coward
I managed to catch this while Ian McKellen was still on which was lovely. There is a lesson to be learnt in checking duration prior to attending. I came out of that theatre feeling like I was seeing the sky for the first time after an incarceration of many years. More thoughts can be seen here.
8. Juno & the Paycock - Gielgud
I came into this with very little background info beyond it being set during the Irish civil war. The interval seemed mad early for this piece, but maybe the place I would have thought more logical for it was a bit late on. I overheard people in the theatre not really rating Mark Rylance's performance, and he was a bit difficult to understand in places - but I thought that was kind of the point? He was playing a drunk, he was supposed to slur! I did find the juxtaposition between the comic and the tragic a bit jarring at first, but again I think that's supposed to be the point. I feel like I came out of the theatre feeling a bit confused, but I like it better after some reflection.
9. Waiting for Godot - Theatre Royal Haymarket
I really loved the set for this - it looked like an illustration out of a storybook pouring out of its frame. This was quite a fun rendition, but I'm glad I had a vague knowledge of the play beforehand so I knew what to expect. (My mother hates this play and someone else I know literally fell asleep in it). What I will say is the sound from outside the auditorium really travels in this theatre, so not ideal for such a quiet play - very distracting.

BAGMAN - Movie Poster
In the dark horror film BAGMAN, a family finds themselves ensnared in a nightmare as they are hunted by a malevolent, mythical creature. For centuries and across cultures, parents have warned their children of the legendary Bagman, who snatches innocent children and stuffs them into his vile, rotting bag—never to be seen again.
Patrick McKee (Sam Claflin) narrowly escaped such an encounter as a boy, which left him with lasting scars throughout his adulthood. Now, Patrick’s childhood tormentor has returned, threatening the safety of his wife Karina (Antonia Thomas) and son Jake (Caréll Vincent Rhoden).
BAGMAN is directed by Colm McCarthy; screenplay by John Hulme ; starring Sam Claflin, Antonia Thomas, Sharon D Clarke, Steven Cree, William Hope, Adelle Leonce, Peter McDonald, Henry Pettigrew, & Will Davis.
From Lionsgate, BAGMAN will be in theaters Sept. 20th, 2024.

😂🤣 Can totally picture Matthew’s face!
Adelle Leonce :"One of the final days was one of the final final scenes of the whole series, and it had most of the characters in it – it was so fun, we turned the music on really loud and we all just danced in a location that will be familiar to you all by now.
"Matthew didn't know but Teresa (Palmer) did. They put a song on and everybody started to get up and started dancing. Matthew had no idea, he was like 'what the hell is going on?'
"It was really jokes, really strange seeing Lindsay Duncan dance. She is so hot, I love her."
